The Megalithic Area of Aosta

The Megalitic Area of Aosta

The site was discovered in 1969 and although it is thought to date back to the Neolithic period, it also contains finds from later periods.

In fact, as I will explain during our visit, the area was used for different purposes from the 5th millennium BC to the Middle Ages, and its surface bears traces of each era. Thanks to modern research methods, it has been possible to identify and clarify the sequence of construction phases. The most interesting remains, however, are those from the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.

We will come across: ritual ploughing for reconciliation, the furrows of which have been handed down to us, magnificent funerary monuments that illustrate the way in which death and the afterlife were viewed, circular pits used as storehouses, alignments of poles and anthropomorphic steles. The latter are the most striking artefacts: some have only an anthropomorphic outline, others are engraved and rich in details such as arms, heads, shoulders, clothes, weapons and pendants.
